Project Description:

Engineering Examples was hired by Precision Structural Engineering to perform structural engineering inspection for (3) fabric truss structures located at the Auto Nation USA Dealership. The dimensions for the truss structures are as follows:

 

Structure 1 – 84′ x 30′ x 28′, (4) trusses

Structure 2 – 100′ x 80′ x 35′, (9) trusses

Structure 3 – 70′ x 130′ x 32′, (14) trusses

 

Exterior pictures of the structures are shown below:

 

  • An overall inspection plan was adopted for this project. In addition to taking hundreds of pictures of critical structural components, we also inspected each structure for the following items:
  • We first checked that the overall structure from the outside matched the structure that was on on the structural drawings.
  • We took measurements of the overall width, length, and height to check that they matched the overall dimensions shown in the structural drawings
  • We checked that the fabric covered the entire truss structure
  • We inspected the number of trusses and made sure they matched the number of truss rows shown on the structural drawings
  • We inspected each truss and made sure each structural truss was structurally sound
  • We confirmed that the type and number of connections for each truss matched the connections presented in the structural drawings
  • We visually inspected each connection and made sure that each connection was adequate and all bolts were tight
  • We made sure that the lateral X-bracing for each truss matched the lateral X-bracing shown on the structural drawings
  • We inspected the connections between the lateral X-bracing
  • We inspected the inspected the layout of the ground framing where the truss is attached to the ground
  • We confirmed the number of brackets on the ground framing matched the number of brackets shown in the structural drawing 
  • We ensured that all brackets on the ground framing were securely attached to both the truss and ground
  • We inspected the layout of the tensioned wire rope cables on the roof and side walls and confirmed that they matched the layout presented in the structural drawings
  • We checked that all tensioned wire rope cables were in tension and not sagging
  • We inspected the turnbuckles and made sure that they were not damaged
