Designing a Fillet Welded Connection for a Plate in Tension Attached to a Gusset Plate

June 8, 2017 Abdul Siraj, P.E.

In this post, I will discuss the twelfth example in our steel design course covering bolted and welded simple steel connections. The goal of this steel design example is to design a fillet welded connection for a plate in tension attached to a gusset plate. We are using the 13th edition of the AISC Steel Construction Manual.

The problem statement states,

The connection shown below is subjected to a service dead load of 5 kips and a service live load of 18 kips. Both the gusset and tension members are 3/8″ thick and A36 steel. Design a welded connection using LRFD and ASD.
