In this post, I will discuss the ninth example in our steel design course covering the analysis and design of beam members. The goal of this steel design example is to choose the lightest beam section for a simply supported beam per LRFD and ASD. We are using the 13th edition of the AISC Steel Construction Manual.
The problem statement states,
Select a standard hot rolled shape for a beam given the following conditions:
Material: A992 Steel
Span Length: 25 ft
Uniform Service Live Load: 6.5 k/ft
Maximum Permissible Live Load Deflection: L/240
Also assume that the beam has continuous lateral support
