Calculating the Flexural Strength of a Beam Subject to Different Lateral Support Conditions per LRFD and ASD

In this post, I will discuss the fourth example in our steel design course covering the analysis and design of beam members. The goal of this steel design example is to calculate the flexural strength of a beam subject to different lateral support conditions per LRFD and ASD. We are using the 13th edition of the AISC Steel Construction Manual.


The problem statement states,


For a W14 x 74 beam of A242 steel, determine the flexural strength for the following conditions:


  1. Continuous lateral support
  2. Unbraced length of 20′ and Cb = 1.0
  3. Unbraced length of 35′ and Cb = 1.0
