Calculating the Displacement at the Free End of a Cantilever Beam Subjected to Uniform Loading Using Virtual Work Method

In this post, I will discuss the first example in our structural analysis and theory of structures course covering the analysis of beams using the virtual work method. The goal of this example is to calculate the displacement at the free end of a cantilever beam subjected to uniform loading using virtual work method.

 

The problem statement states,

 

Find the displacement at Joint B for the cantilever steel beam using virtual work method .

Moment of Inertia, I = 500(10^6) mm^4

Young’s Modulus, E = 200 GPa
