Calculating Deflection Due to Dead and Live Loads for a Simply Supported Wide Flange Beam

In this post, I will discuss the eighth example in our steel design course covering the analysis and design of beam members. The goal of this steel design example is to calculate the deflection due to dead and live loads for a simply supported wide flange beam. We are using the 13th edition of the AISC Steel Construction Manual.


The problem statement states,


Determine the dead load and live load deflection for the beam shown below. If the maximum permissible live load deflection is L/360, is the beam satisfactory.
