In this post, I will go over the fifth example in our mechanics of materials course covering column buckling. The goal of this example is to calculate the critical buckling load for a rectangular wood / timber column fixed at both ends.
The engineering problem statement states,
The 14 ft wooden rectangular column shown below is fixed at both ends. Assuming that yielding does not occur, find the critical buckling load.
Modulus of Elasticity, E = 1600 ksi
