Calculating the Critical Buckling Load for a Rectangular Wood / Timber Column Fixed at the Bottom and Pinned at the Top

In this post, I will go over the sixth example in our mechanics of materials course covering column buckling. The goal of this example is to calculate the critical buckling load for a rectangular wood / timber column fixed at the bottom and pinned at the top.

 

The engineering problem statement states,

 

The 14 ft wooden rectangular column is fixed at the bottom and pinned at the top. Assuming that yielding does not occur, find the critical buckling load.

 

Modulus of Elasticity, E = 1600 ksi
